Tsukuba International Camp
We will hold an international camp for children aged 3 to 12 in July and August 2011.
The camp will be held in English, but students do not have to be fluent in English to attend. However, students must have a positive attitude toward learning English and be willing to try to use all of the English words that they know to communicate.
Dates
Week 1: Monday, July 25 to Friday, July 29, 2011
Week 2: Monday, August 1 to Friday, August 5, 2011
Children can attend just one week, or both weeks.
Time
9:30am to 3:00pm
We will also offer extended care for campers who need to arrive earlier or leave later. (8:00am to 9:30am, 3:00pm to 4:30pm)
(Please note that this is a DAY CAMP, not an overnight camp.)
Location
Tsukuba International School
300-2645 Ibaraki-ken, Tsukuba-shi, Kamigo 7846-1
Tel/Fax: 029-886-5447
Mobile: 080-6638-6787
Participants
We will be accepting students between the ages of 3 and 5 for the “little campers” program and students between the ages of 6 and 12 for the “big campers” program.
(We will need at least 15 campers to join in order to run the camp. As this is the first year we are running this program, we are not sure how many students will join. If we do not receive a minimum of 15 applications, we may have to cancel the camp. Thank you for your understanding.)
Update: As of July 11, we have 9 campers registered for Week 1 and 14 campers registered for Week 2, so we have decided to run both weeks.
Goals
The goals of the camp are:
- To give students opportunities to be creative and engage their minds with challenging activities
- To give students a chance to practise their English over the summer
- To give students a chance to meet people from other cultures
Cost
30,000 yen per student (18,000 yen per additional sibling) per week
The cost includes transportation by bus (if necessary) and does not include food or drinks. Students must bring a healthy lunch and drinks every day. Students who stay for extended care in the afternoon should bring a healthy snack (e.g. vegetables).
Transportation
A bus service is offered with stops in Hitachino Ushiku, Arakawaoki, Namiki, Ninomiya, Tsukuba Center, Kenkyu Gakuen Station, and Banpaku Kinen Koen Station.

Language
The language of the camp will be English, but there may be some children in the camp who will not be fluent. We will allow non-fluent children to attend if they have a positive attitude toward learning English and are willing to try to use all of the English words that they know to communicate. The counsellors will interact with the campers in English.
The camp counsellors will mainly be students from the University of Tsukuba and other foreign residents in the city. The counsellors will not all be native English speakers, but they will all be fluent in English. We are hoping to have counsellors from many different countries so the students can learn languages other than English (e.g. Russian, Spanish, Portuguese) and have a chance to interact with people from many different countries.
Program
The exact program for the weeks has not been decided, and will depend on the number of students who participate, the ages of the students, and the talents and abilities of the camp counsellors. We are hoping to create an interesting and educational program that will let students put their creativity and thinking skills to good use. We are thinking of working on some kind of week-long project such as “Building a Rube Goldberg Machine” and having two or more teams competing to make the best machine by the end of the week.
Here is a proposed schedule for the week. This may change as we get a better idea of enrollment.
